Podhurst Orseck Receives

‘Litigation Department of the Year’ Award

Miami’s preeminent litigation firm is recognized as one of this year’s Daily Business Review’s “Professional Excellence” award recipients

Miami-based litigation boutique Podhurst Orseck is pleased to announce that the firm has been selected as one of the honorees for the 2020 Daily Business Review Professional Excellence Awards: “Litigation Department of the Year” category.

The annual award recognizes key practice areas and achievements of law firms and lawyers throughout South Florida’s legal community. The ‘Litigation Department of the Year’ category highlights law firm(s) that demonstrate tremendous contributions to the industry and accomplishments that emphasize excellence in the department.

The award is announced following Podhurst Orseck’s exemplary work in leading the most sophisticated litigation matters across the country. For more than five decades, Podhurst Orseck has garnered international prominence through its aviation work with matters involving the 1972 crash of Eastern Airlines Flight 401 to being selected to help lead nearly 100 cases filed over the Ethiopian Airlines crash that led to the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. To date, Podhurst Orseck has handled more than 125 matters involving airline crashes around the world. In addition to the firm’s aviation work, more than half of Podhurst Orseck’s practice involves complex commercial litigation, with the firm representing plaintiffs in some of the biggest class action and multi-district litigation matters across the country. Recent cases include a $1.5 billion settlement over faulty Takata airbags; a $410 million settlement with Bank of America over excessive fees; a $57 million settlement with Volkswagen over suspension defects; and a settlement with the N.F.L. over player brain injuries.

The firm is also currently involved with a class action filed against Zantac containing an ingredient that could allegedly cause cancer, one of the nation’s largest antitrust litigations involving 36 Blue Cross Blue Shield companies, as well as leading a class action against Mazda Motor Corp. for its allegedly defective automatic braking systems in new car models. Podhurst Orseck is also representing business owners in a series of class actions and standalone lawsuits against insurance companies for allegedly refusing to provide business interruption insurance, which is included under contractual agreements.
