Joel D. Eaton, a partner at Podhurst Orseck and a former U.S. Navy fighter pilot, received a Lifetime Achievement award for his more than 45 years in appellate law, during which he shaped Florida tort law through over a thousand appeals. Two of his most significant accomplishments were successful appeals to the Florida Supreme Court that established manufacturers’ liability must be measured without accounting for the initial collision and effectively overturned the “open and obvious hazard doctrine” for defective products. Eaton also co-founded the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) in the early 1990s and believes appellate work is key to constructively influencing the direction of the law.
