Boeing’s crisis with its 737 Max aircraft is expected to extend into the next year due to a new potential problem with a microprocessor discovered during testing. The company will delay submitting a software fix to the Federal Aviation Administration for testing until September, pushing the plane’s return to service to the end of the year at the earliest. This prolonged grounding will increase the compensation Boeing owes to airlines such as Southwest, United, and American for canceled flights and delayed deliveries. Even after the grounded jets are cleared, it will take until well into 2020 to deliver the backlog of newly built planes.
