Automakers in the multidistrict litigation concerning Takata Corp.’s defective air bags contend that Takata’s $1 billion settlement absolves them of liability. Before U.S. District Judge Federico Moreno, attorneys for companies including Honda argued the agreement proves they were victims who were deceived by Takata’s falsified safety data. The settlement allocates $850 million for the automakers, but plaintiffs’ lead attorney, Peter Prieto, dismissed their claim of being victims as “ludicrous.” The plaintiffs maintain that automakers like Ford and Honda knew the inflators were unsafe for years but continued to use them because they were inexpensive.
