Arlene Goldberg, a Fort Myers widow, will receive Social Security survivor’s benefits for her late wife, Carol Goldwasser, after initially being denied them. Goldberg and Goldwasser were partners for 47 years and married in New York, but Florida’s refusal to recognize the marriage led to the denial of benefits after Goldwasser’s death in 2014. Following a lawsuit filed on her behalf by the ACLU, the Social Security Administration has now agreed to fully recognize the marriage and provide Goldberg with the benefits to which she was entitled.
