Attorneys for victims of faulty Takata airbags are objecting to the manufacturer’s $1 billion criminal plea deal. They argue the agreement will be used to shield Takata’s U.S. subsidiary and several automakers from civil liability in pending lawsuits. The lawyers, including Kevin Dean and Thomas Willingham, claim the deal contains inaccurate and misleading information that wrongly suggests Takata alone was culpable for the exploding airbags. While automakers assert the plea deal undermines civil claims by confirming Takata’s fraud, plaintiffs’ lawyers like Peter Prieto contend that evidence shows these auto companies were not innocent victims. U.S. District Judge George Caram Steeh has accepted the plea deal.
