More than 10 months after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went missing with 239 people on board, Malaysian investigators have officially declared its disappearance an accident. The director general of Malaysia’s civil aviation department, Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, stated that the aircraft is presumed to have exhausted its fuel over the southern Indian Ocean, with all on board presumed dead. This declaration clears the way for families of the passengers, including 154 from China, to pursue compensation claims and obtain death certificates. While the underwater search west of Perth, Australia, is set to continue, some family members and their legal representatives have expressed anger and skepticism about the announcement and the search’s location. The Malaysian government has assured that the search is not over and that an interim report on the investigation will be released around the one-year anniversary of the incident.
