Former NFL and Alabama fullback Kevin Turner died at age 46 after being diagnosed with the neurological disease ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2010. Following his diagnosis, Turner became the president of the Kevin Turner Foundation to raise awareness about the potential links between repeated brain trauma in athletes and ALS. He was the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the NFL regarding concussions, and a league official acknowledged a link between football and brain disease. Turner’s attorneys noted that he selflessly fought for compensation for retired players and that his brain and spine would be donated for further research.
