Maine Plane Crash Updates

Podhurst Orseck partner Stephen Rosenthal is representing the families of victims of the February 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in multiple lawsuits. One case, currently before the Florida Supreme Court, will determine if the Broward School Board’s liability is capped at a total of $300,000 for a single incident, or if each victim’s case is a separate occurrence. Rosenthal is also representing the parents of victim Jaime Guttenberg in a suit against Smith & Wesson’s parent company, American Outdoor Brands, and the gun store that sold the weapon to the shooter. This second lawsuit challenges a Florida law designed to deter litigation against the firearms industry by holding plaintiffs liable for the defendant’s legal fees and damages. Rosenthal argues the statute was intended to prevent governments, not private citizens, from suing gun manufacturers.
