Victims injured by Takata Corp.’s exploding air bags requested a judge delay the approval of a $1 billion settlement with the U.S. government. Represented by lawyers Kevin Dean and Craig Hilborn, the victims argued before U.S. District Judge George Caram Steeh that the agreement contains inaccurate assertions that could shield automakers from liability. The settlement calls for Takata to plead guilty to wire fraud for falsifying data about its products, which have been linked to at least 17 deaths worldwide. The lawyers specifically contest the agreement’s characterization of automakers as victims, citing evidence that they knowingly purchased the faulty bags to save money.
