The Department of Justice is negotiating settlements for over 100 women who filed claims against the FBI for failing to properly investigate sexual assault allegations against former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. High-profile gymnasts, including Simone Biles and Aly Raisman, are among the claimants alleging they were assaulted after the FBI was first notified of Nassar’s abuse in 2015. Lawyers for the victims were contacted by the Justice Department to begin settlement talks after a DOJ report revealed FBI agents mishandled the initial claims, allowing Nassar to continue abusing patients for over a year. The claims, some seeking up to $10 million per victim, argue that the women were harmed as a direct result of the FBI’s negligence.
