General Motors Co. will recall 7 million vehicles worldwide due to potentially dangerous Takata air bag inflators. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rejected the automaker’s petition to avoid the callback, a decision GM stated it will abide by despite disagreeing with it. The recall applies to 5.9 million 2007-2014 trucks and SUVs in the U.S. and is projected to cost the company $1.2 billion. While 18 U.S. deaths have been linked to Takata inflator ruptures, which can send metal fragments flying, none have occurred in GM vehicles.
